Ammonia Cracking Process

The process of ammonia cracking goes hand in hand with the blue hydrogen production process. It plays a crucial role in the hydrogen economy by enabling the transportation and storage of hydrogen in the form of ammonia. The transport of blue hydrogen is challenging when there are construction obstacles that prevent the installation of piped transport systems and the process of converting the blue hydrogen into ammonia provides a viable solution for safer transport.

To create ammonia, the blue hydrogen is heated in a reactor tube within a furnace chamber and combined with nitrogen. The combination of the hydrogen and nitrogen creates ammonia which is a more stable element to transport via land or sea in a holding tank. Once the ammonia has been delivered to the final destination it will go through the cracking process. During the ammonia cracking process the ammonia moves through a bundle of reactor tubes that flow through a furnace chamber. The heat applied to the reactor tubes in the furnace chamber cracks the ammonia back into nitrogen and blue hydrogen. The separate gasses are then transferred through the tubing system to a quick cooling chamber. The cooling of the gasses keep the nitrogen and blue hydrogen separate.

Ammonia Cracking Furnaces

Lindberg/MPH designs and manufactures industrial furnaces for the ammonia cracking process. The patent pending electrically heated chamber design allows for continuous operation utilizing tubing bundles that flow through the furnace chamber and connect to the other production equipment. The ammonia cracking furnace design features a custom heating chamber lined with ceramic fiber block insulation to minimize heat loss and provide optimal temperature uniformity. Electric heating elements are strategically placed to provide precise temperature control around the customer supplied reactor tubes with multiple zones of control. This patent pending design gives you the flexibility to adjust heating rates of the ammonia as it flows through the chamber.

Ammonia Cracking Furnace Features

  • Control System – Multiple zones of control across the length of the reaction tube
  • Precise Temperature Control in the multiple zones
  • Recording and data logging capabilities
  • Monitoring and detection of element failures to minimize lost production time
  • Ceramic fiber block insulation
